I just like to say these works creep the heck out of me – there is something in the mixture of disfigurement and delicious candy which makes it totally unpalatable. Never less wanted to lick off the buttercream (my bad cupcake eating habit).
It’s not just a sweet thing, his other work intrigues me just as much, and I have posted some meaty picks below. I have not flagged as NSFW but I think the below are ok right?.. Let me know as nothing is NSFW in my world sometimes it is hard to gauge.
Move over Will Cotton I have a crush on a new sweet inspired artist. The person in question is Japanese artist Osamu Watanabe who creates sculptures made entirely of sweets. The sugary artificial sweetness of his sculpting material comes across visually in many of his pieces such as the rabbit shown below. It also totally reminds me of a cutesy version of Scott Hove’s Cakeland.
Could not more wish he had been on hand to create my head piece and shoulder pads for the Edible Beach shoot with Nathan Pask for the Cake & Bake Show as shown below.
Picking a favorite piece from his portfolio is a bit like choosing which puppy to have. That said I think it has to be his take on Van Gogh’s Starry Night below as literally thousands of artists have used this piece as inspiration and I have never seen anything like his interpretation before (although of course the infamous Starry Night cake came close).
Anyway that’s that – HAVE to stop being distracted by Pinterest and blogging and crack on with some serious work :-( In case you are thinking this is not very ‘EYHO’ i have to disagree… imagine all the crazy ‘rude things’ you could create sweet sculptures of?!…
I have recently been introduced to the work of Bill Turpin a prosthetic make up artist who has created some incredible pieces – a few of the food related ones make me wonder if he has been inside my brain at some point!
He’s also very kindly said I can share these images of his work, done in collaboration with photographer Jesse Seaward, on the site. Perfect to see just after lunch eh, and yes of course my favorite is the strawberry cock tart did you really have to ask?!
Images of some more of his more personal projects below which, I am not ashamed to say, also terrify me! The hand trotter is going to haunt my dreams for years to come.
Love this FREE (yes Free) Er Banksy high res image from Pictures on Walls which you can then print in any way you want – ironically even take free out of the equation this is one of my favorite pieces from him. Now I have been a fan of Photobox for a while (super fast service and great quality) and combining them with this print adds up to all sorts of awesomeness!
I’ll be honest and say I find beef jerky hard enough to stomach (never eaten it and never will) without having to add green zombie flesh into the equation. Not fussed? Then you can buy it there!
All at EYHO are massive fans of Sarah Jones who, much like The Butcher of Caker Street, combines cake artistry with special effects makeup to create what are simply some of the best cakes I have ever seen. Her latest cake, Zombie Bride (directly below), was inspired by the Haunted Hayride of Horror in Lenoir City, TN, where Sarah creates ghouls with special effects makeup. When you look at the range of Sarah’s work (zombie Dolly Parton is one of my favourite cakes ever) there is really is no question that decorative cake makers deserve the same recognition, acclaim & budget (!!!) most commonly associated with artists. I should also say that Sarah does not sell her cakes – worth mentioning as many of the best cake makers we have found come from a group of those who don’t do it full time for but for love and creativity. The precise reason why we reach out to people here in the UK who bake for all sorts of different reasons at all our events. I bet all of these taste bloody amazing too.
