Medical illustrator and teacher of human dissection Emily Evans has released a range of exciting skull wallpaper adding her range of homewares. This includes a series of histology plates which sold out within hours of going on sale.

The elegant design of the sugar skull is representative of the Mexican ‘Day of the Dead’ celebrations, the folkloric skull an iconic symbol of life and death. The intricately illustrated skull has been given a sophisticated twist by replicating it in gold on a rich matt dark charcoal, making it a luxurious addition to any interior. Retailing at £120 per roll, further colourways will be added later in the year. The histology plates (more on those below) sold out super fast so if you are interested I suggest you need to order ASAP.

Throb – anatomical heart gifts for Valentine’s Day

Very excited to share more information about the anatomical heart pop up in London for Valentine’s Day. Indicative of the way Eat Your Heart out has become a cultural leader, the shop is 60% gifts and art 40% cakes and chocolate treats. It’s being run under the guise of Anatomical Snuff Box, a venture from myself and Emily Evans promoting the education of anatomy using cultural channels. You can see all of the gifts here (more being added daily). The wonderful Kraken Rum are also supporting the event so expect lots of free rum shots and rum soaked cakes – if you have not tried this amazing drink yet here is your chance.

So if I had to pick my predicted ‘top sellers’ it would be the amazing crochet hearts from Kate Jenkins who is an INCREDIBLE textile artist. I have been a fan of hers for years so it’s really humbling she know thinks enough of ‘Miss Cakehead’ to create some bespoke pieces for our shop. Kate has also produced a range of tea towels and cards featuring the pieces so her work is affordable for all.

There’s also this cocktail sharer from Bespoke Barware which I predict will be a top seller for them all year round. I will most certainly be buying one for starters!

ANATOMICAL HEART POP UP SET TO HIT LONDON

46456_128629107294895_1673293110_n

Between the 8th – 10th February 2013 a secret location in East London will be playing host to romantic pop up with a twist; every single one of the gifts, cards or edible treats on sale will be based on an anatomically correct heart. It is a venture from Miss Cakehead & Medical Illustrator Emily Evans who have teamed up to create Anatomical Snuffbox, an outfit with sole aim of promoting and producing anatomy led cultural events. The anatomical hearts on sale have been sourced from the finest arts, crafts and cake makers from both from the UK and further afield, many of who have been commissioned to create unique pieces for the project. Expect to see anatomical heart inspired pieces in the form of jewelry, art prints, cards, embroidery, ceramics and of course cake and chocolate.

As with any Miss Cakehead event you should expect the unexpected and a solid chocolate human heart, cast from the victim of a police suicide victim, by artist Stephen Shanabrook, is also on sale. The piece clearly showing the entry and exit bullet holes of the bullet.

Miss Cakehead says: It’s my passion to give people something new and fresh to buy and I am really looking forward to being able to expand my curating into gifts and art. To be honest if I could have my way I would have banned anything pink and ‘heart’ shaped but I wasn’t allowed.

Emily says: As an anatomist, nothing brings me greater pleasure than getting others enthusiastic about anatomy. Valentines day can be a daunting prospect, so I’d like to think this event celebrating the human heart will offer alternative anatomical treats for the one you love (be that someone else or just yourself!).

3D Anatomical Heart Cookie (and more)

As many of you already know in response to popular demand there will be an Eat Your Heart Out pop up store in February this year on the 7th, 8th & 9th February, London (it’s actually the first event in a series which I will be doing with Emily Evans but more of that soon)…

This stage of any project is always really exciting so wanted to share some of the edible concepts we have had in so far. This 3D heart cookie from Made With Love By Me / Hannah Glennerster is one of them. It is a three-dimensional interactive maple syrup anatomical heart cookie which has been airbrushed, royal iced and hand-painted. The top cookie comes off to reveal the inner workings of the heart on the bottom cookie which is also a space where you can store a message for your loved one. I see this  piece as a romantic extreme fortune cookie!

And there’s more… Miss Insomnia Tulip has come up with this incredible Heart of Stone made from oreo fudge with sugar blood.

The big difference between this event and previous ones is that with Emily on board we’ll be branching out into craft, homewares and art for the first time so it’s a one stop shop for all those who are bored by the saccarine valentines offering and / or pink. We already have some amazing people on board some picks shown below.

Giselle’s Bleeding Heart Brooch from Etsy user AllThingsOdd – being a rubbish ‘shop keeper’ I’ve already mentally bought one of these

Chocolate artist Cake for Breakfast will also be making anatomically correct heart lollipop and solid 100% anatomically correct sold chocolate hearts weighing in at 1lb. Awesome already right and this is just the start!

We’re still on the look out for new artists and bakers so drop me a line if interested – emmylou.cakehead@gmail.com

Screen Printing in Human Blood

Cakehead Loves Evil:

The day job!!!

Originally posted on Cakehead Loves Evil:

Screen printing in human blood is something I have wanted to do ever since I saw this poster from mental band Watain printed in human blood by designer Metastazis. Of course there is also the Saw II stunt were posters were screen printed with blood taken from Saw star Tobi Bell (pretty sure the blood donor bit is just a PR ‘white lie’). Blood also has a firm place in the art world, Marc Quinn most notably casting his face in frozen blood. Finally lest we forget The Flaming Lips also created a poster using the blood of lead singer Wayne Coyne (who I LOVE).

If I am honest screen printing in blood has been in a LOT of new business pitches I have done over the past few years as a result of my fascination with the concept. Capcom being the client who had the nerve to finally go…

Cake with removable heart…

Whoop another official Eat your Heart Out (well, more eat your heart ‘in’) submission idea, this time from medical artist Emily Evans who has enlisted her sisters awesome baking skills to bring her vision to life. Emily said:

It will be as life-like and yummy as possible with blood red sponge, marzipan fat etc… Since I drew this I’ve actually found some great retractors in my ‘surgical instrument drawer’ we could use to make it even more realistic. I was thinking of having some edible blood-covered surgical gloves as an accessory too. It will be actual size and the heart can be taken out of it’s bloody wound.

YUM!!! I do love that sketch and need to think of a way it can end up on my desk ;-)
